Christmas is Impossible
Key Verse: “For nothing is impossible with God.” –Luke 1:37
I love to watch Christmas movies. One of my favorite Christmas movies is Jingle All the Way, a comedy staring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger plays a workaholic father who never has enough time for his family. When Schwarzenegger’s character misses his son’s karate graduation because of a work emergency, he promises to get his son the toy he wants for Christmas. Little does this workaholic father know, that it will be impossible to purchase the hottest toy of the season when Christmas is just a few days away. Jingle all the way, is a comedy of a Christmas miracle when a small toy can help a family learn to love each other again. Finding a toy that is sold out in most stores may seem impossible, but it is not even close to as impossible as a virgin girl becoming pregnant.
In Luke 1, Luke writes about 2 women who it would be impossible to bare a child, get pregnant. The first was an older lady named Elizabeth who had been trying to have children with her husband Zechariah for years, but Elizabeth was barren. It was impossible for Elizabeth to have a child, especially now at her advanced age, but with God nothing is impossible. The second was a young woman who was engaged to be married to a carpenter. This young woman’s name was Mary. Mary had followed God’s instruction and was saving herself for her husband. She was a virgin, but the angel Gabriel appeared to her and told her that she would have a son. Mary then asks the obvious question, “How will this be?” How can it be that a virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son? This is impossible! But the angel’s response is, “For nothing is impossible with God.”
God is a God of the impossible. It is impossible to create the universe out of nothing! It is impossible for a couple over 90 years old to have a child! It is impossible for a sea to split in two and leave only dry ground! It is impossible for bread to fall from the heavens! It is impossible to spend a night in a den of lions and live! It is impossible to be thrown into fire and not burn up! It is impossible for a barren woman to get pregnant! It is impossible for a virgin to have a child! We serve a God who can do the impossible!
What impossible task are you facing this Christmas season? Turn it over to the Lord. Today you might be thinking, this Christmas is going to be impossible. It may be that this is the first Christmas you are dealing with the lost of a close family member, or potentially financial issues are consuming your thoughts. Whatever the situation is this Christmas, know that the first Christmas was just impossible. On Christmas, we celebrate the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ, who was born of a virgin. How can it be that a virgin could give birth to a son? Nothing is impossible with God!
Read. Read Luke1 and pray that the Holy Spirit would open your mind to the truth of God’s Word.
Cast your cares on Him. “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7
Pray. Pray for the Holy Spirit to do the impossible.
Thank Him. Thank the Lord for His mercy and grace.
