When I am Afraid
Key Verse: When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.–Psalm 56:3
When I was a teenager, I thought I was invincible; I felt as if I would live forever. Moreover, I was filled with anticipation about the future, believing I would fulfill all my dreams. Now several years have passed, and I’ve endured some unexpected trials. Sometimes, I find myself dreading bad news, and even trying to escape any possible suffering. But, during these fearful moments, I have a choice to make: Will I be afraid of the future, or will I trust God?
In Psalm 56, the Psalmist declares, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?” The poet way saying that, despite his circumstances, he would not be afraid. Although he may have felt scared, he was not going to put his trust in what was visible, but rather he would put his trust in God. Furthermore, the psalmist acknowledged that there were times when he would indeed feel afraid. The Psalmist would face trials that would require him to make a choice between faith or fear. Knowing that God was trustworthy, the psalmist relied on God for help. Psalm 57 emphasizes this God’s willingness to help stating, “Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my sould takes refuge; in the shadow of yor wings I will take refuge till the storms of destruction pass by. “ The psalmist knew that he did not need to be afraid of any storm in life because God is a refuge, a help, in times of trouble. For this very reason, the psalmist proclaimed, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you” (Psalm 56:3).
When do you usually feel afraid? Are you going through a trial that scares you to death? What are you afraid of right now? Whatever you are going through, know this: God is a refuge, so put your trust in Him.
